Architecture Plus has been working with Adams 12 since the year 2000. Initially, APlus performed an audit and cost estimates for repairs on all but their very newest schools. Additional reports that were tailored for their use to develop long-range maintenance and capital improvement plans were provided.
Four years later, the school district wanted to update the audit and reevaluate the condition of all of their schools. At that time, they chose to perform condition assessments on one-third of their schools for each of the next three years. They also chose to do most of the work in-house. Architecture Plus provided the necessary training for their maintenance staff to perform the audits. Now that they are familiar with the program and have gained cost estimating confidence, Adams 12 will be doing their own audits, cost estimating and data entry, using our custom, on-line program.
“[When] I joined the staff of Adams 12 Five Star Schools…a proposed Capital Development Bond proposal was not approved by the communities we served. Feedback indicated that the needs for repair and renewal were not adequately defined and communicated to the community in the bond proposal. Initially, Adams 12 retained three teams to provide facility assessments for the first group of schools. Jim Cox was the leader of one of these teams. When the assessments were completed and the reports were evaluated, the team led by Jim Cox was selected to assess the condition of the remaining school facilities in the District. Jim Cox developed a process that was consistent, concise, and systematic, and his approach included administrators and staff in the process. Jim Cox also developed a database for the District that was useful in prioritizing projects, and projecting costs, for remediation of deferred maintenance. A new Capital Development Bond proposal was presented to the communities and was adopted by a majority vote.” —David Besel, Adams 12 five star schools
